Day 29

Yesterday I dared to struggle. Today I dare to win.
~ Bernadette Devlin

Once again, Daniel had a good, restful night. He went
through the night without assistance from the ventilator.
Cardiovascular conditioning prior to April 29 has
contributed greatly to his ability to now breath on his
own!
At 10:45 AM this morning the nursing staff will see
how Daniel does with a new challenge....sitting up.
His helmet is here and he is ready. Will give you an
update later.
Daniel is in physical therapy at this moment.

Update:
Daniel sat up this morning for one hour. He was wearing
the protective helmet. The physical therapists will
put him in the sitting position for one hour, twice a day.

Daniel's doctor saw him this morning and remarked that he
is making progress, albeit very slowly. He reassessed
Daniel's score on the Glasgow Coma Scale, at this particular
time it appeared that Daniel is an 8 on the scale. Not yet
at the moderate level.
Cathy stated that Daniel's movements may be spontaneous,
but not consistant.
Daniel still has a very persistant cough and perhaps a touch of
pneumonia. The pulmonary doctor is closely monitoring this
and categorizes pulmonary as critical. He is still receiving
antibiotics.
The doctor has ordered that the insulin drip be discontinued.
Daniel will receive insulin only if he needs it.

Chuy Miranda was here at 8:00, visited and talked to
Daniel about the big futbol game today in Estadio Olimpico,
Rome, Italy. It is the final of the UEFA Champions League,
between Barcelona and Manchester United. I shared with
Chuy that Daniel and Danielito were talking about the
match-up between Messi and Ronaldo with me during
spring break when they visited us in San Felipe.
We all hoped Barcelona would prevail....................
Well, the game started this morning at 11:45, just as
Daniel was seated and facing the tv.
Barcelona was victorious! 2 - 0 Messi and E'to scoring.

Take care of one another.............

  1. Daniel had mentioned to me the game he watched with you Sal in San Felipe. He said that you got him hooked on a soccer player named "Hulk". Daniel liked his aggressive style.

  2. Hey Chuy,

But did you tell him how well the Dodgers are doing? How about that Juan Pierre?

Does anyone know what time the soccer game is on?

  4. Victor,

My bad. I was trying to find the game for you and it said 1-0 final on the UEFA website. In american Football when it has the final next to the score usually means the final score. I didn't watch the game.

  5. Barcelona 2 Manchester United 0, that was the final score. Los Doyer's don't need Manny right now, Juan is doing a great job in his place. Best record in beisbol without him, so like I said, if your not cheating your not trying.

  8. I thoroughly enjoyed Chuy's story and I can picture Daniel making fun of anyone who did not know the answer to his question. Love it.

  9. My family has gotten to know the Vega family because our daughters were in the same kindergarten class at Lilac Elementary. The girls were friends, the moms were friends.....and somehow, one day, we ended up with a tiny golden retriever puppy living in our house. We were now part of the Vega family --- and we had the papers (AKC) to prove it!

When we had to leave town for a few days, and the 4 month old puppy (a.k.a. Luna) needed a place to stay, who better than Grandma and Grandpa Vega to take care of her. Cathy and Daniel welcomed Luna back into their home (OK, we twisted their arms just a bit) and then they proceeded to spend the next few days nursing her back to health from a terrible infection that set in the 2nd day! They were so incredibly caring and helpful....they literally saved her life.

This was the first time I really met Daniel - on the phone talking about Luna - how she looked, what she was doing, what she was eating, when she went pee, etc. He caringly walked me through every detail. He seemed like a really great individual, and very soon thereafter we met in person.

We quickly hit it off, talking about bilingual education for our kids....but quickly turning to politics. He liked that I "got" his custom license plate, when most nobody else did. His intensity, knowledge, passion and love of the discussion was infectious! We were like kindred spirits -- both following the election season closely, with great hope for the change in direction that our country so desperately needed.

The night we got to know the Vega Family even better, was at our house - the night of the 2008 election. We watched and screamed and danced as American's sweepingly voted for change. We all shared a wonderful 'taquisa', the kids yelling O BA MA... the adults yelling O BA MA....oh, and did I mention there was quite a bit of tequila flowing as well -- it was a good night!!

We left that night full of hope and renewed energy. A very special evening indeed. I look forward to spending many more nights like this one...in the very ear future.

Cathy -- Anything you need, anything we can help you with....just ask!

Daniel -- I know you want to see the changes that are (already)coming. We'll soon even have the first hispanic supreme court justice. You hang in there, and just Keep Fighting. We can watch the swearing in ceremony together in September.

    YES, YOU CAN!

Y nos veremos un dia muy pronto.

    Un abrazo fuerte!

  10. Life has alaways been a struggle for Vega and I. See we are Commrades in the WAr of unjustice against our peaople. Vega and I have Vowed to be change agents against social unjustice wherever, whenever, however. I have to Admitt that Daniel Vega is much braver that I could ever be. I recall traveling through Rosorito, Mexico in the year 2001 with my good friend "Vega". The van that we were traveling in was staopped by Mexican Military personell. We were all asked to step out of the van. We were searched and questioned. Of course I was nurvious as hell (literally Shacking). We were accompanied by one White female, two Mexican females, two youg Mexican Men and one balck Guy (ME). Lord knows what the military officals assumed we were doing there (I can only Imagine). The Milatary officials begain an intense dialog (In Spanish) that appeared to focus on me the only balck guy in the group. The military personell were made up of about 8-10 young men bearing AK47 assault riffles. We were all afraid. Not Vega! He was maddd! He maintained a confident look about him the entire ordeal. It was like he rose to the occaision. He begain speaking with the commander of the unit. The dialog appeared to be heating up, and the men (including Vega) begain to point at me. Vega begain to raise his voice and began walking side to side in front of the military commander. Well after a long 15 min. conversation between Vega and the leader of the Mexican Military unit, the commander appeared to repremand one of his men by sending him away and yealling at him. Soon after we were allowed to go. In the VAn, I asked Vega what that was all about? Vega informed me that the men thought that the black guy looked suspecious and wanted to know if I Possesed any wepons or drugs. Vega informed me that he politley (LOL) infromed the men that we were simply students traveling through Mexico on our way to a retreat. That was mildly put by Vega, because I was able to make out a few of the cuss words that he used during the diolog. My point of saying all of this, was to let you all know that I was safe that day, in a foreign Country tahnks to a Brave Heart. Vega was willing to die for me that day. I will never forget such bravery. That type of courage can't be taught or duplicated.
